Room 330, Wednesday Evening
Evan had gotten his first voicemail today since... well... since he'd come to the island, really. He'd been out walking Ozzy, and he'd just missed the call, and was actually almost excited to see that it had been Yeul to leave the message.
Until he went to listen to it, and was met, first, with the sound of his own voice in his own message to anyone who called.
... Especially if it's you, Ma and Pa. I haven't heard from you in ages.
It hit him like a baseball bat to the chest, and he was out of breath as he hit the button to play back the message that was there for him. There, Yeul's voice, promising him in a voice incapable of lying that no matter what, she would never be afraid of him. She probably had no idea just how badly he needed to hear someone say those things. He listened to her message through once. And then, after a moment's hesitation, he listened to it again. And again.
He was going to have to change his own voicemail message soon so that it wouldn't blindside him again. But before that, he was just going to sit there, curled up on his bed, listening to someone telling him that he was a good person over and over and over, and struggling not to cry.

He kind of tapered off at that, chewing on his lip.
"You... I could see a lot of people loving you. I..." He bit his lip again, hard.
He wasn't going to say it. She didn't need him crying at her because he was coming to realize that he had never really been loved. If Fantomex had loved him, he sure had a funny way of showing it. And everyone else he'd thought had... hadn't even been real.
"It... makes me very sorry that I'm not one of your people."

He held her close for a moment longer, and then leaned back to look Sholeh in the eye.
"I would never send you away."

He didn't know anything about her people, he realized. Didn't know what it was about them that so many people apparently hated and feared.
But he knew Sholeh, and that was enough for him.
"All I'm doing here is hiding."
Some hero.

She was in his corner right now.

Nope. He was totally a dog.
His tentative smile grew a tiny bit more certain, then.
"And I like spending time with you, too. Which is sort of a given since you make me less sad."

"If you wanted to, I would like that," he replied. "We can look through some of the books I got when we went out before break and pick one of those? I haven't had much of a chance to read through them all yet..."

There were better words for it than 'nice,' but Evan wasn't really big on digging for his vocabulary today. Trying to make bigger words just meant he'd be prone to blurting out more of them.

"Could you wrap your arms around me a few times when we do?" Sholeh asked. "Feels comfortable and safe."

Oh dear.
"... I would like to be dating-dating... if you'd like to be..."
Yes, out of all of that, that's what Evan was going to cling to.

He probably got that by now, Sholeh. Having, y'know, spoken to you. Ever.

Okay, he was making a face now.
"Actually, I'm kind of thankful it didn't. I wouldn't want my first girlfriend to be a computer simulation."
Still making that face.
"I mean, maybe we could... figure it out together? I'm not sure there's really a specific way to do it." A beat. "Not it-it. Dating-dating it."
That cleared it all up nicely, thank you Evan.

Did that make sense? Sholeh hoped it made sense. Communication was the grownup thing to do. That's what Professor Rogers and Professor Odinson said, anyway.

He blushed a little more as he realized he had just suggested what they'd already been doing.
"And... holding hands, and maybe eventually even... kissing?"
no subject
Hiding her face in her hands, Sholeh moaned. "I really don't like saying everything that I think."
no subject
A pause and then he was offering her a tentative smile. "And I don't think you'd drool on me. I don't have any experience with kissing, either, so at least we'd be on the same learning curve. But I'd be okay with hand-holding if you're worried about it..."

"Maybe we could just read?"
no subject
"Let's read," he agreed, softly. "I've got plenty of books for us to pick from."
